Development community embraces Decent Work at Busan Conference

Brussels, 1 December (ITUC OnLine): Decent Work has been included in the international development effectiveness agenda for the first time, following strong representations from the international trade union movement at the 4th High Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness in Busan, Korea this week. Concerns remain, however, about the risks arising from the way the conclusions of the Forum deal with the role of the private sector in development cooperation.

Busan Partnership a compromise, says civil society

1 December, Busan, Republic of Korea: “By participating in high level negotiations on aid and development for the first time, people’s organizations can take credit for cementing democratic ownership and human rights in the Busan Outcome Document – but more works needs to be done on advancing favorable conditions for civil society,” said Open Forum co-chair Emele Duituturaga in response to the newly agreed Busan Partnership for Effective Development Cooperation.

PRESS RELEASE: US gender plan lacks the ‘power’ in ‘empowerment’

Women’s organisations from around the world have chosen not to endorse the current Busan Joint Action Plan on Gender Equality and Development that US Secretary of State, Hilary Clinton will launch today. The group are releasing a position statement on the plan which expresses concern about the overwhelming focus on promoting women as vehicles of economic growth, rather than rights holders in the plan. Women’s Groups who have been engaged in the BetterAid civil society platform are particularly concerned about the plan’s narrow focus on developing economies rather than developing women’s enjoyment of rights.
