Ban Ki Moon recognises inspiring role of civil society at day 2 of civil society events at UN LDC 4

On May 8th, the official opening day of civil society events at the UN LDC IV, the UN Secretary General, Mr Ban Ki Moon, recognised the inspiring role of the civil society and called for "trilateral" cooperation between governments, business and CSOs to achieve better development results for the LDCs.

Many of the issues to be discussed in the following days were highlighted at the opening session of civil society activities at the UN LDC 4 on May 8th. The Chair of the Civil Society Steering Group, Mr Arjun Karki, criticised the poor monitoring and implementation of the last Plan of Action which was concluded in Brussels, ten years ago. He mentioned that the biggest problems faced by the LDCs include the lack of good governance and widespread corruption, missing peace and security, deficient productive capacity and poor access to finance. However, he pointed to systemic structural deficiencies to explain why most LDCs remain extremely poor:

The UN High Level Plenary on the Millennium Development Goals in September confirmed the central role that the UNDCF is expected to play in improving development cooperation at the global level. The final declaration stated:
“65). We encourage continued efforts in the Development Cooperation Forum, as the focal point within the United Nations system, to carry out a holistic consideration of issues related to international development cooperation, with the participation of all relevant stakeholders. 80). We reaffirm the role that the Charter of the United Nations and the General Assembly have vested in the Economic and Social Council as a principal body for coordination, policy review, policy dialogue and recommendations on issues of economic and social development and for the follow-up to the Millennium Development Goals, particularly through the annual ministerial review and the Development Cooperation Forum…”

The Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) could never offer a solution to world poverty, nor to structural social and economic injustice. However, they were – and are – a very important step towards reaching a global agreement for poverty eradication. In the year 2000, after the lost decade of the 1990s when aid levels plummeted and poverty sky-rocketed, the MDGs offered renewed hope for the new Millennium.
